Meghan Markle, Actress & Founder of The Tig

Founding The Tig—it was seeing my passion project come to fruition, and being able to share my voice authentically. As an actor, my job is to say other people’s words believably, so to say my own words, to have created a community that people find inspiring and uplifting, and to see the doors The Tig has opened for me (specifically being able to work with UN Women), well it’s bigger than I could have ever dreamed. 

“Be kind to yourself.” I still remind my 33-year-old self that now. 

I used to be a calligrapher. It was how I paid the bills when I was an auditioning actress, and would sit at home addressing envelopes for weddings and bar mitzvahs, dinner party place cards, you name it. I would put a white tube sock on my right hand so that natural oils from my hand didn’t get on the paper. I’m sure there was a chicer way to do it, but it certainly worked!

There’s a popcorn made with coconut oil and pink Himalayan sea salt and I have been known to grab a handful of that in the middle of the night. It makes me feel like Olivia Pope.

You will always find YSL Babydoll mascara, an eyelash curler, Laura Mercier luminating foundation primer (that’s all I use on my face), about five random chapsticks, and Tatcha blotting papers.

Gjusta in Venice. I picked up some nibbles to put out a little lunch spread at home and it included kale-gruyere scones, lox, kippered salmon, and some roasted veggies from the deli case. They have zaatar bialys too! Say that five times fast.

Naked by Deborah Lippmann—it’s truly the most perfect nude polish and looks ladylike if I do say so myself.

I support UN Women, who reached out to me last summer through a story I wrote on The Tig about women’s empowerment. I have been working closely with them ever since and was a presenter at the HeforShe Campaign at the UN Headquarters when Emma Watson gave her speech on feminism. I am really proud to work with such an incredible organization.

I am currently (unapologetically) obsessed with Black Mirror, an anthology series from BBC. Just watch the pilot episode—it’s highly addictive and mind-bending.
